On Tuesday night December 3rd the city hosted a workshop to discuss the future plans for the Dover High School Athletic Fields, led by Councilor Cullen, who presented a comprehensive PowerPoint discussing the merits and downsides of natural versus synthetic turf. As discussion unfolded, it became clear that making an informed and balanced decision will involve weighing various factors, including player safety, city interests, environmental impact, and long-term sustainability.

While my experience is mainly with synthetic surfaces in gymnastics, (no one wants to vault over a LIVE horse!) the principle remains: training environments must mirror what athletes will encounter during competitions. With surrounding towns and most schools that Dover competes against already utilizing synthetic surfaces, we should ask: Are we putting our athletes at a risk by sticking with natural turf?
